CARSON CITY — The Aging and Disability Services Division recently received a federal grant of $450,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to support Nevada Care Connection Resource Centers as part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

CARSON CITY — The Aging and Disability Services Division was recently awarded $6,929,262 in grants from the Administration for Community Living as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The funds will help meet the needs of older adults and people with disabilities as communities implement measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Transportation is hosting community workshops to gather public input on rural transit services and needs. NDOT is updating the Coordinated Human Services Transportation Plan for rural Nevada.

Access to Healthcare Network, a Nevada-based nonprofit helping Nevadans receive access to health, would like to remind individuals 60 and above that Medicare open enrollment is Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

Nevada Health Centers’ Mammovan will be making stops beginning next week around northern Nevada. There will screenings in Carson City, Virginia City, Yerington and Reno.

The mobile Mammovan aims to make mammography services accessible and convenient for women by visiting locations across Nevada. These screenings are primarily for women age 40 and older; however, screenings will be provided to those younger than 40 that have a physician referral.

Gaining access to pediatric cancer care just got easier for children and their families in our region. A new collaborative, Sierra Pediatric Blood and Cancer Consortium, is bringing full-time hemotology-oncology pediatric care to the community’s doorstep.

Based on recent reports from the CDC, beginning in November 2013, there has been a number of reports of severe respiratory illness among young and middle-aged adults, many of whom were infected with Influenza A, the pandemic H1N1 2009 virus.

With widespread flu being reported around the nation, Carson City and Douglas County health officials say they have large supplies of flu vaccine.

Based on recent reports from the CDC, the flu has started to peak nearly 5 weeks early this year, with significant activity reported in over 41 states with 18 deaths reported in children thus far. The predominant current flu strain that is being reported with widespread activity, H3N2 (Influenza A), appears to have good match to the flu strains in this year’s vaccine, according to a news release.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey has scheduled their winter and spring line up of special speakers on the 2nd Thursday of each month during their public meetings. Each meeting also includes resource sharing, updates and discussion on issues of regional importance such as health and wellness, substance abuse prevention and recovery, education, job training, etc.

Join the Nevada Business Connection for its monthly networking breakfast. This month's breakfast will be on Thursday, May 20, beginning at 7:30 a.m., at Gold Dust West in Carson City. It will feature keynote speaker Rick Parr, general manager of the Reno Aces. Parr will speak on the Aces Stadium and freight district future plans.
