Nugget Project committee to discuss new plan on Aug. 8

The Carson Nugget Development Advisory Committee will meet Aug. 8 for possible action to recommend a "simplified and restructured program plan" to the Carson City Board of Supervisors for the Carson City Center Project, AKA Nugget Project.

The new plan calls for the formation of a not-for-profit entity that would take over ownership of the project.

Federal Jobless Report Shows Slight Improvement For Nevada Through Second Quarter

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s official jobless rate may have jumped three-tenths of a percentage point to 12.4 percent in June, but a broader measure of the state’s unemployment picture showed some slight improvement through the second quarter of this year.

State Officials, Lawmakers Reject Claim That Transfer Of Funds To Scholarship Program Was Improper

CARSON CITY – State officials and lawmakers are rejecting the suggestion that they acted improperly last year when fees generated from several college savings programs were shifted to shore up the cash-strapped Gov. Guinn Millennium Scholarship for academically eligible Nevada high school graduates.
But one former lawmaker, who voted for the transfer, acknowledges he remains concerned about the decision.

Carson City woman arrested for felony DUI, drug possession

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested a woman Wednesday evening for her third DUI offense since 2008.

According to the arrest report, a deputy observed a blue Toyota Prius driven by Monette Martin, 52, drive through the road closed barricade at the corner of Saliman and Robinson streets. After stopping her, the deputy reported that he smell alcohol and gave the suspect a field sobriety test, which she wasn't able to complete satisfactorily. A preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol level of .127.

A reminder of special sage grouse hunt applications period

This is a reminder that applications for the 2011 Special Sage Grouse Hunt at Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) are now available on the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) website at ndow.org/hunt/apps/.
The Sheldon hunt will be open for two weekends Sept. 17-18 and Sept. 24-25. This is a permitted hunt, with 75 permits awarded by random draw available for each hunt by reservation only.
The hunt is open to both residents and nonresidents.

Nevada Public Employee Pension Plan Sees Record Investment Return In 2011

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s public employee retirement system saw a whopping 21 percent return on its investments in the fiscal year ending June 30, the executive officer of the agency said today.
“I believe this is the best performance we’ve had in at least 25 years with the fund,” said Dana Bilyeu, executive officer of the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).

CARSON CITY – Lawmakers from 13 western states, including some from Nevada, will converge on Hawaii at the end of the month.

Secretary of State Investigators Arrest Southern Nevada Man in Multi-State Ponzi Scheme

Investigators from the Secretary of State’s office today arrested Hans Seibt at his Las Vegas residence on 25 counts of securities fraud and six counts of theft. The criminal complaint filed by Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto charges that Seibt was essentially operating a Ponzi scheme that victimized investors in Nevada and several other states.

Employment Training Contracts Worth Nearly $24 Million Approved By State Board

CARSON CITY – The state Board of Examiners today approved contracts worth nearly $24 million in federal funds to provide employment and training services to job seekers as Nevada continues to lead the nation in unemployment.

Brian Sandoval’s reluctant decision to support an extension of tax increases to balance the state budget in the 2011 legislative session does not appear to have caused him any lasting damage in the eyes of voters, according to the results of a recent survey by a GOP polling firm.

Nevada Redistricting Efforts Remain In Flux After Court Hearing This Week

CARSON CITY – Efforts to resolve Nevada’s redistricting impasse remain a work in progress after a proposal floated Tuesday by a Carson City judge to use county election officials to draw new legislative and congressional lines ran into some opposition.
The job of redrawing Nevada’s political lines has fallen to District Judge James Todd Russell after two Democrat-approved redistricting plans were vetoed by Gov. Brian Sandoval. Sandoval vetoed the measures after concluding the proposals did not follow the federal Voting Rights Act.

Federal Cut To Energy Assistance Program Means Thousands Of Nevadans Ineligible For Help

CARSON CITY – Thousands of Nevada residents who rely on financial assistance to pay their power bills likely won’t get help this year because of federal funding cuts, a state agency reported today.
Miki Allard, staff specialist with the Division of Welfare and Supportive Services, said federal funding for Nevada’s Energy Assistance Program will amount to only $4 million this year, down from $15.8 million in the fiscal year that just ended June 30.

Bicycle Poker Run

A Bicycle Poker Run is set for Sunday, July 17. This 12 mile ride starts and ends at Mills Park in Carson City. Mostly flat and accessable to all ages. Along the way, there will be 10 challenges at local schools, parks and businesses throughout the city. Challenges include paper airplane toss, bowling, darts and more. Grand prizes for the highest score in each event, best overall score and the best three poker hands. Each sport and fun challenges was designed so that someone as young as a 4th grader can win. The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Sheryl Adams present an evening of "Big-band Jazz Under the Stars" at Comma Courtyard on Tuesday, July 12, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. The courtyard is adjacent to Comma Coffee, 312 S. Brush fire knocked down at Brunswick Canyon in Carson City

Carson City firefighters were able to get a good jump on a brush fire burning early this afternoon near the Bertagnolli quarry in the Brunswick Canyon area. Reports coming in via police scanner is that the fire is under control and mop up has begun.
As of about 1:15 this afternoon much of the fire was said to have been knocked down, no structures were burned and cleanup had begun. Flames were reportedly six feet high with the fire generating lots of smoke. The fire, reported at 12:35, was said to be about 100 x 100 feet wide, according to police scanner traffic.

Carson City deputies arrest two for sexual assault of girls, 11, 12

Carson City Deputies arrested one man and another male they think might be a juvenile for
allegedly taking two girls, 11 and 12 years old, from MIlls Park and sexually assaulting near the Carson River Tuesday night.

Enrique Lopez-Cervantes, 24, and another male whose identification showed he is 17, were arrested Wednesday night after detectives found them at Mills Park.

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports: The road is open, but there is still a LOT of snow around the lake. The lake is about 80% ice covered with some fishable water. Unfortunately, there is enough snow on the ice, you can't tell what is safe and what isn't. With this week's warm temps and some wind, next weekend may be a different story.
