Carson City Sheriff gives update on Christmas Eve fatal shooting
On Christmas Eve at 2:56 p.m., the Carson City Sheriff’s Office received reports of a shooting at an apartment complex at 20 College Parkway, in North Carson.
When deputies and paramedics arrived, they found a male lying at the doorway of a downstairs apartment with a gunshot wound to the chest. Attempts to render medical aid failed and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deceased male was identified as a 41-year-old tenant of the apartment building who resided just upstairs from where the incident took place. His name is pending notification of next of kin.
Deputies immediately secured the apartment area and took into custody the resident of the apartment where the shooting had occurred.
That resident, who’s name is being withheld at this time, told deputies that an aggressive incident had taken place in the doorway of his apartment and that he shot the deceased male. He acknowledged that there was a .22 caliber pistol in the apartment. The resident continues to cooperate with detectives.
Interviews of area residents, as well as the suspected shooter, have disclosed a recent pattern of erratic and aggressive behaviors by the deceased male at and around the apartment complex.
This information was later confirmed by records at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, including several calls for service where the deceased was acting strangely or aggressive to people in the area.
Shortly after midnight the same day, Dec. 24, deputies had responded to the deceased’s apartment for similar but non-aggressive circumstances. During their contact, deputies had insufficient cause to take forced medical actions, but were sufficiently concerned to seize a recently purchased 12-gauge shotgun by the deceased.
Later in the day after searches of both the apartment where the incident had taken place and the deceased’s apartment, the resident who fired the fatal shot was released from custody without any immediate charges being filed.
