Carson City area weather: Dry and cold through weekend, snow potential after Christmas
As a thick layer of fog dug in Thursday morning over Carson City, forecasters with the National Weather Service say a cold, dry front will continue through Christmas Day, with the potential for multiple storms in the final days of 2023.
The fog was expected burn off sometime late Thursday morning and return later in the afternoon, with some upper level clouds sticking around Friday and into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
A dry cold front will push through from the northwest late Friday night into Saturday morning, causing morning temperatures to be quite chilly on Saturday, forecasters said.
"High temperatures will also take a hit, going from the 50s on Friday to low 40s Saturday. Even though it may feel colder this weekend, those temperatures are actually right around normal for this time of year," according to the latest NWS forecaster discussion. "Although it'll be a 'dry' cold front, there's a 20-30 percent chance for some light showers from US-50 northward and a 10-20 percent chance of some light showers south of US-50 from 4 p.m. Friday through around 6 a.m. Saturday."
Snow levels will start off around 7,000 feet then drop to around 5,500 feet as the precipitation is exiting. The amount of snow is expected to only be about a dusting to 1 inch and only up to 0.10 of an inch of rain. While showers may reach as far south as Fallon/Reno, the highest chance and heaviest precipitation rates will be confined to northern Washoe County northward, according to the weather service.
The weather calms after Friday while being on the edge of a weak ridge, forecasters said. Temperatures rebound back to above normal by next Tuesday, with the next best chance to see any precipitation being Wednesday, Dec. 27.
Weather models are consistently showing multiple storms between Dec. 27 and Jan. 3, 2024. Travelers should be prepared and watch the latest forecasts. See NVroads.com for the latest road conditions.
