Carson City area weather: light snow early Tuesday, windy and cold through Christmas
A cold front is expected to bring light snow showers and wind beginning late Monday night that may impact the Tuesday morning commute, according to the National Weather Service.
Snow showers are forecast across the region late Monday evening through Tuesday morning. There is potential for light accumulations impacting the Tuesday morning commute around the Reno, Carson City and Lake Tahoe areas. Amounts look to be mainly under one inch, but even a light coating can cause travel issues, forecasters caution.
Gusty southwest winds will affect much of the region Monday evening into Tuesday morning. Stronger winds are possible for areas along Highway 395 from Carson City to Mammoth to Bishop, and Highway 95 near Hawthorne, where travel impacts for high profile vehicles are looking likely. Winds will switch to the northwest after sunrise Tuesday and remain gusty.
Colder temperatures will sweep in behind the front for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Christmas Eve Thursday. Readings will run 5 to 10 degrees below normal. Morning lows will be quite chilly with teens in Western Nevada cities and single digits to near zero in many mountain valleys.
There is potential for a more unsettled pattern starting just after Christmas Day. While no major storms are anticipated, periods of rain or snow along with gusty winds are possible. Factor that into your travel plans between Christmas and New Years.
