Carson City looking to change redevelopment tax incentives
The generous deal that the Carson City Board of Supervisors made with the Southgate Center to bring in Big Lots, Big 5 and Olive Garden caused some waves among other businesses in town, who complained they didn't get the same terms for their redevelopment incentives.
This has led the city to consider increasing the incentives to other businesses to match those given to Southgate.
At the time of the meeting approving the Southgate deal, Mayor Bob Crowell voted no because the terms of the deal were different than what they had offered other businesses.
After this meeting, Office of Business Development Director Joe McCarthy was put on administrative leave because he presented the more favorable deal for Southgate to the board instead of the standard incentives offered to other businesses. McCarthy later agreed to leave his post by June 30.
Now we can see the fallout from this, as other businesses come to the city, wanting the same deal.
