Weather Service: Carson City could see up to 3 inches of snow by Sunday
Gusty winds and snow expected to arrive in Carson City and Sierra later tonight into Sunday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for much of the region.
Light snow will develop late Saturday night and then become locally moderate to heavy toward daybreak Sunday, according to the weather service. The heaviest snow is likely between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Sunday. The Winter Weather Advisory runs from 10 p.m. Saturday night through 1 p.m. Sunday.
Carson City and surrounding valleys could see up to three inches of snow with 1 to 4 inches in the foothills above 5,000 feet. Locally heavier accumulations are possible where bands develop. In these areas, up to 6 inches of snow is possible. There is high confidence for snow levels down to around 3,500 feet, according to the weather service.
Those traveling can expect icy and snow covered roads into Sunday morning. Travel delays are possible into early Sunday afternoon.
Always be prepared and carry chains and extra supplies with you just in case.
If you have plans to travel back across the Sierra at the end of the holiday weekend, be sure to check the latest forecast at weather.gov/Reno and check road conditions with Caltrans and NDOT.
