Carson City area travel weather: High winds prompt warning, snow expected in Sierra
Gusty conditions ahead of rain and snow showers in the Carson City region has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Warning beginning Sunday morning.
A strong Pacific storm is moving inland this weekend carrying rain, mountain snow and gusty winds, with gusts anywhere from 35 to 70 mph in wind prone areas, according to the weather service.
Winds are projected to increase late Saturday and Sunday morning, becoming strong and gusty Sunday afternoon through Sunday night.
The weather service projects the strongest winds to occur between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday with additional strong gusts between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Monday morning.
The National Weather Service recommends securing patio items, holiday decorations, and trash cans quickly before winds increase. It's also a good idea to bring in the small pets.
When it comes to snow accumulation in the mountains, estimates are 8 to 14 inches over Sierra passes, a couple of inches around Lake Tahoe, and les than 2 inches accumulation down to 5,500 feet.
Travel delays can be expected in the Sierra on Sunday night through Monday morning due to slick roads.
