The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum the Focus of Upcoming Carson City Rotary Meeting
The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center’s Museum Director Bobbi Rahder will be the guest speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The meeting takes place online Tuesday, November 24, at 12:30 P.M.
The club has returned to virtual meetings due to Covid-19 concerns. Guests are invited to attend the meeting via ZOOM.
The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum honors the students who attended the boarding school from 1890-1980, and their families. The school was established to educate Native American children, with the ultimate goal of assimilation. The campus is now a Historic District and houses several State of Nevada agencies, managed by the Nevada Indian Commission.
“Stewart Indian School is an important part of Carson City, and Nevada’s past and present” Ms. Rahder says. “Many people don’t really know its history. For more than 90 years, thousands of Native American students were removed from their homes, families and cultures, and sent to the school. The museum focuses on the resiliency of the Stewart students, their families, and their communities. It’s hoped that it helps them heal from the trauma caused by that experience.”
Ms. Rahder holds a master’s degree in Museum Studies, and is finishing a PhD in American Studies from the University of Kansas. Prior to joining the Stewart Indian School, she served as director of the Haskell Cultural Center & Museum at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas.
