Reno ends 1,000 homes in 120 days program
The Reno City Council voted on Wednesday to sunset the 1,000 homes in 120 days program with 123 units completed, 611 units under building permit and 1,035 units under construction. The original program started in September 2019.
The program offered developers local permit fee deferrals that acted as no-interest “loans” to attract more construction.
One of the criteria Mayor Hillary Schieve highlighted at Wednesday’s meeting was the developments had to be within the central part of the city as opposed to outlying, suburban neighborhoods. She also clarified all housing types, not just affordable housing developments, were eligible.
The over 1,000 homes that were built or are being constructed were developed within the eligible area. Though there was a time limit to participate in this program, Assistant Development Services Director Angela Fuss said the city could organize a similar program in the future.
Schieve said though the program made a dent in the need to develop more housing in the area, there is still more that needs to be done.
