Carson City area Hugs for Homeless winter clothing drive enters second phase
The Saint Teresa of Avila Conference, Saint Vincent de Paul Society is in the middle of a 5-year commitment to provide new winter clothing to our homeless Neighbors in Need in order to protect vulnerable adults and children from our coldest weather.
A fundraising drive, which began in October and successfully raised $4,000, will continue in November and December.
Our generous supporters donated $4,000 during October and include: BIG LOTS, Burlington Coat Factory, C-A-L Ranch Stores, Carson City Toyota, Carson Inn, Knights of Columbus, the McAuley Family Charitable Fund and St. Teresa of Avila Women’s Society.
Our homeless population continues to grow as Carson City faces an affordable rental housing crisis. SVDPS volunteers’ daily interaction with our homeless Neighbors in Need shows that senior citizens and military veterans are two of the fastest growing segments of our unsheltered individuals.
All donations to HUGS for Homeless winter clothing drive are 100% tax deductible. Your monetary support can be sent to St. Vincent de Paul Society, 3000 N. Lompa Lane, Carson City, NV 89706.
Just one $75 donation supplies a new winter coat, gloves, hat and socks for a homeless person this winter. Below are some questions and answers that we receive from our supporters about HUGS for Homeless.
Why do you only purchase new winter clothing versus accepting used winter clothing?
All too often, used clothing is not in good enough condition and suitable for wearing 12-plus hours daily in extreme outdoor conditions. We purchase durable, high-quality winter clothing that provides water resistance and thermal protection while being able to last the entire Carson City 5-month winter season.
Why do you prefer monetary donations versus clothing donations?
First, as a Nevada 501(c)(3) non-profit, we are exempt from state and local sales taxes (a 7% savings). Second, we have negotiated volume discounts with preferred local retailers (Big 5 Sporting Goods, Burlington Coat Factory, C-A-L Ranch Stores, J.C. Penney and Tractor Supply Company) that are not available to individuals/groups.
Thank you in advance for your compassion and generosity toward our most vulnerable citizens. Since SVDPS is completely a volunteer non-profit organization, 100% of donations will be spent on clothing. If you have any questions about HUGS for Homeless, please leave us a message at 775-882-1968 ext. 119.
