Smoke in the valley coming from U.S. Forest Service prescribed burns
This morning, you may have woken up to a smoky horizon and the smell of fire on the air. No need to panic though; the smoke is coming from a routine (though quite large) prescribed burn handled by the U.S. Forest Service in the Inyo National Forest near Mammoth and June Lakes.
"All went well on our prescribed burns today," a spokesperson for the U.S. Forest Service said in a social media post. "Lakes Basin firefighters completed another 20 acres with plans to continue pile burning tomorrow. We may use the picture (attached) as our Christmas card… it’s beautiful!"
According to the Forest Service, the forgathers on the "bowl" unit completed 80 more acres yesterday, and will continue tomorrow.
They also said to expect to see and smell smoke overnight and throughout the day.
