Carson City marks World War I Armistice Centennial with Bells of Peace ringing
The centennial anniversary of World War I Armistice was observed Sunday morning at the Nevada State Museum in downtown Carson City with a "Bells of Peace" commemoration featuring the replica Liberty Bell displayed in Loftin Park, the outdoor courtyard just east of the Dema Guinn Concourse.
Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and Nevada Division of Museums and History Administrator Peter Barton delivered remarks prior to the ceremonial bell ringing, which occurred at the stroke of 11 a.m., marking precisely 100 years since armistice took effect at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, ending World War I.
Sunday's ceremonial bell ringers included Nevada military veterans Mike Shaugnessy, Sam Knipmeyer and Dave Pierson.
The "Bells of Peace" bell ringing ceremony was one of thousands across the country remembering the 100th anniversary of World War I Armistice. More than 10,000 communities, organizations and military units nationwide were to participate in Sunday's "Bells of Peace" commemoration.
The local event also served as recognition of the Nevadans who served and sacrificed in the First World War.
