Kohl's clerk faces embezzlement charge after $1,000 taken from cash register
A Carson City woman and an employee of Kohl's faces a felony embezzlement charge after she was found on video surveillance taking more than $1,000 from the company cash register.
Katherine Lynn Koval, 27, was arrested on Tuesday. Bail was set at $15,000.
According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to Kohl's at 3871 South Carson Street to meet with the store's loss prevention officer. The officer briefed police about the thefts and told them they had video surveillance of Koval taking money, about $1,020, from the register over a six-day period. The loss prevention officer reported that Koval took money on the following days: On Oct. 23 she had taken $200; on Oct. 24, $100; on Oct. 26, $100; on Oct 29, $200 on Nov. 3, $200 and on Nov. 9, $220.
The store officer reported that Kohl's had recovered the $220 she had taken on the day of, which still left $800 unaccounted for. The officer stated Koval had also taken about $380 in merchandise. He told officers two of the rings that had been recovered had been taken the day before.
The Kohl's officer took Carson City authorities into a room where Koval was sitting in a chair. The deputy read the woman her Miranda rights and she waived them, according to the arrest report, and signed the rights waiver form.
The deputy asked Koval about the embezzlement she had been accused of. The woman stated she didn't make a lot of money; that she was the only one in the household working and that she was trying to take care of her family and that's why she began taking money from her cash register each day, according to the arrest report.
Koval told officers that she also took several items from the store, but she hadn't taken them to sell but to give to her children, the arrest report stated. She said she took $400 to $500, two sterling silver rings, and several other pairs, according to the arrest report. The woman stated she didn't remember it being as much property and money as was told to her from the loss prevention officer. Authorities made Koval complete a written statement.
Deputies completed an evidence release form for the property and the $220 that the loss prevention officer had stated they had recovered from property and cash listed. The officer gave deputies the surveillance video on disc which he stated showed Koval stealing the money from her register.
The woman was placed in custody. In a subsequent search of the woman's purse, the arresting deputy found $224. He took the money to be booked into evidence. The woman said, however, that it was her money, according to the arrest report. The woman, however, wasn't able to show a receipt of receiving any of the monies of the amount the officer had found, the arrest report stated.
