Man jailed after giving brother's name instead of his own to Carson City officer
A Reno man was jailed Wednesday after allegedly using false identification to avoid being arrested by Carson City deputies. Miguel Fuentes-Lopez, 19, is being held in the Carson City Jail on $8,000 bail. He also faces a misdemeanor warrant charge of being in violation of a suspended sentence.
According to the arrest report, a motorcycle patrol officer observed a 2008 Volkswagen Jetta change lanes abruptly in front of the officer without using a turn signal at around 2:40 p.m. The Jetta went from the number 1 travel lane to the number 2 lane, cutting off another vehicle.
Patrol officer Joseph Trotter conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle and made contact with three inside. The rear passenger told the officer he did not have any identification but presented a name and said he did not know his Social Security number, the arrest report states.
A routine check of the name showed prior contact but there weren't any identifying photographs available. Dispatch advised there were no identifying marks to confirm the identity. Because the officer was unable to identify the man, he was arrested and taken to jail.
Upon arrival he told the patrol officer he had given him his brother's name and birthday and stated his real name as being Miguel Fuentes-Lopez. The man told the officer he possibly has a warrant for his arrest and didn't want to go to jail.
A records check verified that the man had a confirmed warrant issued out of Carson City Justice Court on Nov. 4, 2013 for violation of a suspended sentence.
