Carson City area weather: Gusty winds Monday, Sierra snow advisory
Snow expected Monday in the Sierra above Lake Tahoe has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory. Elsewhere, windy conditions with gusts up anywhere from 30 mph to 50 mph will continue around the Carson City area and surrounding counties.
The advisory is in effect from noon Monday to midnight in areas above 7,000 feet in the greater Lake Tahoe area. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches above 7,000 feet.
A dusting to an inch is possible for Lake Tahoe and Truckee communities, according to the weather service, which advises motorists to plan on slippery road conditions, delays, and chain controls. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute. Allow extra time to reach your destination. For road conditions see NVroads.com.
Meanwhile, winds will increase through Monday evening. Potential for west-southwest wind gusts of 30 mph to 45 mph for most areas, with locally stronger gusts of 50+ mph in wind-prone areas such as Washoe Valley and US-395 north of Lee Vining.
Hazardous travel for high-profile vehicles, choppy area lakes, turbulence for aviation, and strong ridge winds 80-100 mph, according to the weather service.
