Deer me, is it November in Carson City already?
The first weekend in November has arrived, and wildlife around the Nevada state capital are gathering or foraging as much as they can before the first snow fall.
Mule deer in Carson City's historic west side neighborhood were plentiful Saturday. One particular band along Mountain Street laid claim to a property owner's yard and all of the vegetation in it.
Carson City's resident deer population is active around town and bears have been reported in the area, too.
Motorists should keep a keen eye out for four-legged pedestrians who often don't use the cross walks. Well, the two-legged kind doesn't, either.
Residents and visitors out walking the neighborhoods should be aware that wildlife may be in the immediate area. Avoid any close contact and don't try to pet or feed them. They'll find what they need.
Bears are an altogether different challenge. They will often find something to eat in garbage bins, open doors, sheds or garages, and other places that are unsecured.
Contact the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) for bear-proofing tips and ways to discourage wildlife from coming to you for food.
