Carson City area weather: Sunny through Wednesday, gusty winds Thursday and Friday
Dry conditions, light winds and warm weather will continue for the Carson City region through Wednesday before a mostly wind-driven weather system arrives Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather system will push a strong cold front through the area Thursday night bringing strong, gusty winds. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the Carson City, Carson Valley, Reno and Sparks areas from 3 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday.
The amount of precipitation will be on the low side for the region since the system is tracking more north of Reno. The storm will produce strong sustained winds with widespread gusts for valleys of 40 to 50 mph, according to the weather service.
The strongest sustained winds will be in the late afternoon and early evening for valley locations and peaking overnight Thursday into Friday morning for the foothills and ridges. Ridge winds will approach 100 mph. This will be the region's first widespread strong wind event in a while, so the weather service advises to plan accordingly.
Travel restrictions are possible for high profile vehicles along with an increased risk for turbulence and wind shear for aviation. Hazardous boating conditions can be expected across all area lakes as well. The system will then move out by Friday afternoon setting up for a pleasant fall weekend.
