Turn off the Sprinkler, Bring in the Pets: Hard freeze to fall across Carson City region
Expect widespread sub-freezing temperatures Sunday night into Monday morning for both rural and urban areas throughout the Carson City region, western Nevada and Sierra.
The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for much of the region, beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday night.
Valley lows will range from 20 to 30, while mountain valleys will dip well into the teens. For Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, morning lows will be anywhere from 20 to 25, according to the weather service.
Be sure to bring in the pets, turn off sprinklers and cover or take in: exposed pipes, sensitive plants and livestock. While the typical date of the first freeze varies a little at different locations in the area, Oct. 14-15 is an average first freeze date for lower elevations.
For many areas, this will be the first hard freeze of the fall season, killing unprotected garden plants and cold sensitive crops. Shorter periods of freezing temperatures are also possible in typically colder valleys Sunday night into Monday morning.
Over the past 20 years, Minden has seen the earliest of the lower elevation freezes, usually around Sept. 25, and the Reno-Tahoe Int’l Airport has seen the latest, usually around Oct. 23, according to the weather service.
Gusty winds are likely with and just behind the front, with dry conditions despite the cooler temperatures. This may lead to a short period of critical fire weather conditions this afternoon. Once the front passes, east to northeast winds will persist into Monday morning in the northern Sierra with a north to northwest direction for Mono county.
Gusts of 40-60 mph are possible over Sierra ridges Sunday night, with 20-35 mph gusts mixing down into the Tahoe Basin and lower elevations of Sierra, Plumas and western Lassen counties.
After the front moves out, daytime highs around Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County will remain in the low to mid 60s through Wednesday and upper 60s Thursday through Saturday.
