Carson City honors fallen Nevada firefighters at memorial
The Nevada State Honor Guard as well as the Las Vegas Firefighters Local 1285 Pipe and Drum Corps opened services Saturday morning at the Nevada State Firefighters Memorial in Mills Park to honor two Las Vegas area firefighters who died in the line of duty last year.
Capt. Yaphet K. Miller of the North Las Vegas Fire Department died Oct. 5, 2016 from injuries sustained in a Sept. 22 fire. The 43 year-old fire captain was a 22-year veteran of the North Las Vegas Fire Department.
Anthony Curtis Stephens of Las Vegas Fire and Rescue also lost his life Nov. 29, 2016 after battling cancer. The 58 year-old was a 25-year veteran of the department who served as a firefighter, paramedic as well as a fire investigator.
The state of Nevada considers life lost from cancer a line of duty death, because the disease is a leading cause of death among firefighters.
Two other firefighters, Richard M. Riolo and Rusty McAllister, were recognized Saturday for Distinguished Service at the ceremony.
Saturday's memorial concluded the week-long observance of National Fire Prevention Week in Nevada.
