Judge James T. Russell to seek re-election to Carson City District Court bench
Carson City District Court Judge James Todd Russell has announced he will run for re-election. Judge Russell was appointed to the bench by Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn in December 2006. He was then elected on Nov. 7, 2008, being unopposed for a six-year term commencing in January 2009.
Judge Russell grew up on Carson City, attended Carson High School and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1969, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. From 1969 to 1971, he served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant.
On completion of military service, he attended and graduated with a Juris Doctorate in 1974 from McGeorge School of Law. He served as a Law Clerk to the Nevada Supreme Court, and then as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of Nevada.
In 1976, he entered private practice in Carson City, Nevada, where he remained for 30 years before going on the bench. While in private practice, he obtained an AV preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell for his legal ability and high ethical standards.
He is a member of the Nevada Bar Association, a past member of the American Bar Association, American Board of Trial Attorneys, and served as President of the First Judicial District Bar Association.
From October 1999 to September 2003, he was appointed to the Nevada Commission on Ethics, and served two and one half years as Chairman thereof. He has served on various Federal Court and Nevada Supreme Court Committees; and is currently the President of the Nevada District Judge’s Association, having been on its Board of Directors for four years.
While raising his two sons with his wife, Jeanne, here in Carson City, he coached numerous sports teams and served as the referee and starter for swim meets, to include high school state championships and University of Nevada swim meets.
