Carson City arrests: Jail inmate booked for felony escape after leaving hospital

A Carson City jail inmate who was at Carson Tahoe Hospital for a medical furlough was arrested Saturday for suspicion of felony escape by a prisoner and conspiracy to escape custody, a gross misdemeanor offense, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Kyle Gabelman was located on North Carson Street and arrested following an investigation. He had been told earlier by CCSO deputies when he was on medical furlough at the hospital that once he was treated he was to be picked up and returned to Carson City Jail, according to the arrest report.

The man acknowledged this and signed a form. He was told if he left during his medical furlough he would be charged with escape. He had acknowledged this with jail deputies, the report states.

As the man was being discharged from the hospital he was told by hospital staff he was going back to jail. Before hospital staff could call deputies to come pick him up, he left.

It was learned that Gabelman was given clothes by a relative, who told hospital staff she thought he was being released and was able to turn himself back in, the report states. Hospital staff informed the relative that Gabelman was not free to leave.

Gabelman changed his clothes and walked out of the hospital where he was located on camera and, found to enter a vehicle, which was later determined to be the relative's vehicle. Officers later located the vehicle, where the relative stated she dropped the man off at Mallory Behavioral Health Crisis Center but did not watch him walk in, the report states.

The man was located in the 700 block of North Carson Street by a CCSO sergeant and was arrested. Bail: $27,500.

According to the booking report, deputies were patrolling the area of College Parkway and Lompa Lane when they observed a vehicle that failed to yield the right of way to a motorcycle, causing to the motorcycle to swerve and avoid a crash.

The deputy could see the female driver was talking on her cell phone without the use of a hands-free device and immediately conducted a traffic stop on College Parkway. The driver and sole occupant identified herself as Borst. A K9 did an exterior sniff of the woman's vehicle, which alerted positive for drugs, the report states.

An officer located the vehicle driving north on Airport Road and observed the right two tires were deflated so when the vehicle tried to turn left, it understeered and missed the turn and corrected back on the roadway, nearly crashing into a vehicle that had been following, the report states.

The vehicle went into a parking lot and the man was detained. He showed signs of being intoxicated including slurred speech, red eyes and swaying. He was advised he was being detained. The man stated he wanted his lawyer because he was going to jail. The man was asked if he would submit to field sobriety tests. The man stated no. Due to the circumstances, he was arrested for suspicion of DUI.
