Carson City fire engine crew returns safely Monday from North Fire
A Carson City fire crew returned safely Monday afternoon from fighting the North Fire, which began burning one week ago on Sept. 3 in the Tahoe National Forest.
"The fire was on difficult terrain, but we managed," said Kevin Nyberg of Engine 51. "We all returned home safely, which is the important part."
The fire burned nearly 1,200 acres west of Truckee near Emigrant Gap and as of Monday was 77 percent contained. Evacuations have been lifted, and full containment is expected before Sept. 15. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon said as of Monday, all of its crews are home safe and sound, for the time being.
“This has been a very busy fire season. So far Carson City Fire Department has had firefighters battling fires in six states,” he said. "The devastation, speed and ferocity which the fire have spread this year is alarming. So far, six firefighters have died from fighting these blazes in California alone."
Some of the Engine 51 crew that returned will go right back to shift at the Carson City Fire Department Station 52 on College Parkway.
“We are very proud of our firefighters efforts and are relieved to have all of them home safely, even if it is for a short time, as this fire season is showing no signs of slowing down," said Chief Slamon.
Meanwhile, the Carson City Fire Department reminds all residents that the fire danger in Carson City is extreme and there has not been measurable precipitation for several months.
"There are Red Flag Warnings for our area for the next several days. We urge everyone to be safe and fire-wise when enjoying the outdoors," said Chief Slamon.
