NDOT: Highway 50 Cave Rock tunnel extension construction 75 percent complete
With construction to extend the westbound U.S. 50 Cave Rock tunnel in Lake Tahoe more than 75 percent complete, the Nevada Department of Transportation is asking motorists to anticipate minor travel delays and changes to work zone traffic patterns as final elements of construction are completed.
NDOT has completed construction of an approximately 60-foot long and 27-foot tall Cave Rock tunnel extension structure on westbound U.S. 50 to enhance safety and reduce the potential of rock fall onto the roadway.
This month, sprayable concrete known as shotcrete is being applied to the exterior of the new tunnel and hand-molded to match texture and colors of the surrounding natural rockface. Lighting and white paint is also being added inside the westbound and eastbound tunnel for better visibility and two new radar-activated overhead signs will be installed to automatically notify drivers of bicyclists or potentially icy conditions in the tunnels.
As crews begin repaving of both directions of highway through the Cave Rock tunnels and complete roadside drainage and water quality improvements near Glenbrook, drivers are asked to anticipate work zone traffic changes. Beginning the week of Sept. 12 through mid-October, travel lanes may be shifted through the work zone as traffic begins being alternated between the eastbound and westbound tunnels for final paving and lighting work. Oversize and overdimensional semi-trucks are not permitted through the tunnel during construction.
The approximately $6 million project by contractor Q&D Construction is scheduled to complete in October. Further project information is available at www.nevadadot.com/caverock or call (775) 888-7000.
