Nevada Guard Memorial Walk/Run Saturday in Carson City to commemorate IHOP shooting victims
Soldiers and Airmen of the Nevada Guard will participate in an informal memorial run/walk Saturday to commemorate the victims of the International House of Pancakes shooting on Sept. 6, 2011. The run/walk will start at the Carson City IHOP, 3883 S. Carson St., at 6 a.m.
Shooting survivor Sgt. 1st Class Jeremy Mock will lead a pack of Guard runners and walkers on a five-kilometer route from the restaurant to the Office of the Adjutant General complex at 2460 Fairview Drive in Carson City. Tracy Kelly, widow of Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, is set to greet the runners at the finish of the route.
On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, were killed in a shooting rampage conducted by Eduardo Sencion.
Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, who retired from Harrah's in 1999, was also killed during the incident.
Sgt. Caitlin Kelley, 25, of Reno was shot in the foot and Mock suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm. Florence Gunderson's husband, Wally Gunderson, a retired U.S. Marine Corps member, was among seven others injured.
Capt. Laura Boldry, the equal opportunity officer for the Nevada Army National Guard, is one of the organizers of the event and said the run/walk would be a fitting way to remember the three Guardsmen.
"I felt it would be a way to bring their spirits back to the Office of the Adjutant General and home, because they didn't make it back that day," Boldry said. "We will all be running to bring them home."
