Nevada governor, local leaders help break ground on Carson City affordable housing project
Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak, local leaders and representatives of U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto and Congressman Mark Amodei helped break ground Thursday on a new affordable housing development in Carson City.
The development, known as Sierra Flats, has been in the works since 2018, according to Steve Aichroth of the Nevada Housing Division.
After numerous set backs this year due to inflation, lumber shortages and more, the ground was finally ceremonially broken, and construction should begin later this month.
"Thank you to everyone for sharing this glorious moment with us," said Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell. "This is going to help our community thrive."
Gov. Sisolak also spoke on the importance of increasing affordable housing.
"There are enormous needs in Nevada for affordable housing," said Sisolak. "A lack of affordable housing affects all Nevadans, but none moreso than our seniors, veterans and disabled citizens. It takes all of us working together to address the housing crisis."
Developer Mike Schneider hosted the event, and commended Sisolak for his support of affordable housing ventures.
"He has put $500 million into this type of housing through Home Means Nevada, where as places like Florida, with many more people and minority communities, has put zero money toward these projects," said Schneider. "We're fortunate to have a governor who understands the housing issues."
Representatives from both U.S. Sen. Cortez-Masto and Congressman Amodei thanked Carson City and developers for their commitment to providing affordable housing to the community, and presented them with certificates commemorating the event.
Sierra Flats Phase 1 will provide 160 units to low income individuals, ranging in price from between $450 and $1,150 a month.
The project is intended for seniors and families whose income is not more than 60 percent of the Carson City median gross income, according to developers.
