Carson City arrests: Teen afraid of getting in trouble for pot jailed after pursuit ends in crash

A 19-year-old man was arrested late Monday for suspicion of felony eluding, gross misdemeanor child endangerment and 12 misdemeanor offenses following a vehicle pursuit that began on South Carson Street near the county line, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
Jacob Ryan Ranft of Reno was taken into custody at 11:42 p.m. He also was booked for misdemeanor obstructing an officer, hit and run causing property damage, speeding (129 mph) failure to maintain a lane, disobedience to traffic control, reckless driving, possession of 1 ounce or less of marijuna under 21 years of age, possession of drug paraphernalia, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, open container and minor possession of alcohol.
A 16-year-old male with him, was also taken into custody.
According to the booking report, Douglas County Sheriff's Office contacted CCSO regarding a vehicle pursuit where the DCSO sergeant observed a vehicle pass him doing 129 miles per hour on South Carson Street and Old Clear Creek Road.
A CCSO deputy observed the vehicle failing to maintain a lane running a stop sign at the Koontz and South Curry street intersection. The driver, later identified as Jacob Ranft, crashed the vehicle into a curb at the Galaxy Fandango movie theater parking lot and fled on foot with a juvenile passenger, according to the report.
Witnesses said the two ran into the Michael Hohl Chevrolet parking area. An officer drove through the parking area and issued commands over his PA for the suspects to come out with their hands up. A deputy located the 19-year-old suspect hiding in the back of a pickup. He was given commands to exit, and was taken into custody.
The suspect was placed in a patrol vehicle and read his Miranda warning. He was asked why he was running from police and he said it was because he had marijuana and marijuana pipes in the vehicle. He said he didn't want to get in trouble for having those things so he ran from police, the report states.
The deputy then asked why he fled on foot and left the scene of the accident. The suspect said he was scared. He was asked if he would allow his vehicle to be searched. The suspect said the officer could. While searching the car a deputy located less than an ounce of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and two open containers of alcohol. The suspect admitted to smoking marijuana an hour prior. He was taken to jail. Bail: $20,000.
