2nd annual Alzheimer’s 5K Fundraiser Run returns to Carson City Saturday, Sept. 17
The 2nd annual 5K run raising funds for the Northern Nevada Alzheimer’s Association (NNAA) will be returning to Carson City on Saturday, Sept. 17.
According to event organizer Brenda Collings, each year NNAA holds a big annual walk at the Sparks Marina, but she wanted to create a fundraising event closer to home.
“Our intent is to have a local event that would benefit our Carson, Dayton, Gardnerville area and it’s much closer and convenient for the public in our community,” said Collings. “The purpose and mission for us is to help the families affected by being caretakers and the questions and issues they face as the disease progresses. Most people are saddened by the diagnosis let alone the constant change that happens with the decline of the individual with the disease.”
Collings personally cared for both her parents with Alzheimers — her father from 1985 to 1990, and her mother who passed from Alzheimer’s just last year.
“Having the connections that Northern Nevada Alzheimer’s Association was a huge help and incredibly different than the care and education that was out there with my dad in the late 1980’s,” said Collings. “This event is a pay it forward for me personally to support others during this sad and sometimes very scary time.”
The event takes place Saturday, Sept. 17 with festivities beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. at McFadden’s Plaza.
The 5K consists of a 3.1-mile walk or race throughout Carson City’s west side.
Entertainment includes a live DJ, face painting, rum runners, mimosas and bloody marys, local vendors, and a raffle.
Raffle tickets are for sale at the event, or at Corcoran Global Living located at 1000 N. Division Street, Carson City.
Prizes for the raffle have been donated by the community. Tickets are $5 each or $20 for 5.
