Carson City arrests: Mother booked for leaving 2-year-old daughter home alone
A 29-year-old woman was arrested Friday for suspicion of gross misdemeanor child endangerment for allegedly leaving her 2-year-old daughter home alone to pick up her older daughter from school, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
As per the investigation, a deputy received information about a 7-year-old female juvenile who refused to leave school with her mother. The deputy was advised the child made a complaint to office staff that her mother abuses her, the report states.
The deputy was advised the child was in the office upset, crying and refusing to go with her mother. A school staff member advised she approached the mother and asked to talk to her about her daughter being upset. The mother advised she didn't have time to talk because her other daughter was at home.
The staff member asked how old her other daughter was. The mother replied "three." The staff member asked if her daughter was home alone and the mother replied "yes," the staff member relayed to the investigating deputy. The staff member said she told the mother she should go home to her other daughter. The mother left the school.
A deputy made contact with other school staff who advised the juvenile said "I don't want to go with my mom. She abuses me and slaps my face." The juvenile also stated to staff that her mom is mean and gets mad at her for making noise. There was no visible injuries on the juvenile, the report states.
The CCSO deputy made contact with the child inside the office who was crying uncontrollably. The deputy asked who she wanted to see and she said her daddy. When her mother was mentioned, the 7-year-old started crying harder, saying she wouldn't go with her mother. The deputy asked her why. The girl stated her mother makes her walk alone and she gets scared, the report states.
The deputy requested the school contact the father of the girl to determine if someone was responding to pick her up. The deputy then requested patrol to respond to the residence and conduct a welfare check on the smaller child. A deputy responded to the residence and made contact with the mother and her 2-year-old daughter.
Meanwhile, the school released the 7-year-old to a family friend who was on the child's school emergency contact list. At this time, several calls were made to the Division of Child and Family Services. Due to an adult picking up the child, DCFS said they were not going to physically respond, the report states.
The investigating deputy responded to the home and made contact with the deputy who was called to the home. At that time, the deputy advised that the mother admitted to leaving her 2-year-old daughter home alone, while she walked to the school, approximately .5 miles away to pick up the 7-year-old. The deputy also said that the mother told him that the 7-year-old didn't want to go home with her so she left because the 2-year-old was home alone, the report states.
After further review, the investigating deputy made the decision to arrest the mother for suspicion of child endangerment, a gross misdemeanor offense, for leaving the 2-year-old daughter home alone while she walked to the school to pick up the 7-year-old. School staff advised the the mother had picked up the 7-year-old the day prior and the 2-year-old was not with her.
Due to the mother being arrested, DCFS responded to the scene along with the child's father. The mother was booked for alleged child endangerment. The deputy noted in the report that the mother is 8 months pregnant and has never been arrested. Bail: $2,500.
