Annual Carson City Kiwanis Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day to feature golf tourney, bench press competition
Carson City Kiwanis will host its annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day with a golf tournament, bench press competition and more at Silver Oak Golf and Event Center.
The 11th annual event is happening Saturday, Sept. 14 and features a four-person scramble golf tournament. Apply at the Silver Oak pro shop, 1251 Country Club Dr, Carson City, Blue Zone sporting goods, 3790 N Hwy 395 No. 402, or the Feisty Goat Pub, 1881 E Long St.
Also happening is the annual Carson City bench press championships. This will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. on the Silver Oak patio. The competition offers multiple age groups. The cost is $10 for three lifts.
This year's guest of honor is Mike Longero, who led Carson High School to its last state basketball championship in 1975. Longero went on to play for University of Nevada, Reno where he started for three years. Then he returned to teach and coach at Dayton High School for 12 years and then back to his alma mater, Carson High School, where he retired.

Register early because this event sells out every year. Early check in Friday, Sept. 13 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. to avoid the crowd on Saturday.
Organizers said 75 percent of money raised will go to help pancreatic cancer research. The other 25 percent will help fund our local scholarship program for local high school graduates.
