Carson City area weather: Wind and low humidity expected Saturday prompts fire watch
Windy conditions and low humidity in the forecast have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Fire Weather Watch from Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening for much of western and northern Nevada, including Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, Storey and Washoe counties.
Areas in the Fire Weather Watch zone include Carson City, Douglas, Storey, southern and northern Washoe County, western Lyon, and far southern Lassen counties. The zone also includes the west Humboldt Basin in Pershing County, Lahontan Basin, including Churchill and Eastern Mineral counties.
Winds will be out of the southwest to west 15-25 mph with gusts 30-40 mph with humidity 8 to 15 percent. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The weather service advises people to follow local fire restrictions and avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as using fireworks, abandoning lit campfires, dragging trailer chains, driving over dry grass, target shooting or outdoor work.
