Weekend events feature live music, Carson City Jazz and Beyond festival, outdoor family movie and more
As summer presses forward, so does the lineup of activities this weekend around Carson City, including the kickoff of the Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival, outdoor family movie night at Mills Park, a downtown area ghost walk, live music in Virginia City and at the Brewery Arts Center, vintage Model Ts and more. Here's what's ahead:
— Mile High Jazz Band Association’s annual Carson City Jazz & Beyond Music & Art Festival returns for the 18th year, opening with marquee events on Friday, August 13, featuring Brass Knuckles at the Governor’s Mansion, and Sunday, August 15, featuring Lacy J. Dalton at the Silver Saddle Ranch. Additional music will be all-day on Saturday, August 14.

— Northern Nevada author Molly Dahl and publisher iUniverse have announced the release of her new book, The Art of Emotional Resilience: An Everyday Guide to Resisting Reaction, Cultivating Compassion, and Gracefully Managing Yourself.

— The Carson City Classic Cinema Club summer outdoor movie series concludes this Friday after a last-minute weather cancelation last month. The final movie to play at Mills Park features the funny animal antics-filled animated story of "Zootopia."
In a city of animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy. The movie features the voices of Jennifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman and Idris Elba.
The movie begins at 8:30 p.m. Bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on. Food trucks have been invited to all the summer movies. Mills Park is located at 1111 East William Street in Carson City.
— The summer Carson City Farmers Market continues this Saturday, featuring fresh produce from Nevada Certified Farmers Market growers. The Market also offers a variety of house and garden plants and numerous handmade arts and crafts. The Saturday morning market has grown to become one of Carson’s premier events for locals and tourists alike. You’ll find a direct connection to over 30 vendors per week with roots in Carson City and surrounding areas.
In addition to the wide variety of produce offered, you’ll also find delicious cheeses, artisan breads and pastries, local honey, jams, preserves and ciders. The market is located in the Carson Nugget parking lot, 412 N. Stewart Street at 8:30 a.m. More information can be found here.
— Join CASI for an evening of music, food, and great auction items to benefit animal advocacy programs including our CASI Critter Fixer spay/neuter program. Bark, Whine & Dine will feature a western themed buffet, music by Ten Dollar Pony, and amazing live and silent auction items. — The blues and bluegrass band Dirty Cello is not your typical band. Fronted by renowned classical cellist, Rebecca Roudman, this genre-bending band plays high energy blues and bluegrass like you’ve never heard before. There’s even a smattering of classic rock like the Rolling Stones thrown in.
The band specializes in unique venues that are off the beaten path like Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City. The band is fresh off a tour to the far northern reaches of Iceland where they played many shows including a slightly confused cowboy festival held in their honor. — The Levitt AMP Carson City Music Series presented by The Change Companies presents headliner Southern Drawl, this Saturday, August 14, The show starts at 7 p.m. with Keith Alan Barnett and the Lonesome Polecat Band for an opening set and then at 8 p.m. Southern Drawl Band takes the stage.
Mike Nash and the Southern Drawl Band from Knoxville and Nashville have been described as southern rock “with a twist of lime distilled in the backwoods of Tennessee.” Since their formation in 2012, the band has been touring all over the U.S. and building a dedicated fan base who will travel hundreds of miles to see them play.
They have shared the stage with legends like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Jimmy Buffet, country greats like Aaron Trippin and Neil McCoy, and modern stars like Brantley Gilbert and Eli Young Band. They have one awards for Band of the and Entertainer of the year, can be heard on radio stations across the county, and are still being recognized for their great, Americana sound. — The Carson City Ghost Walk happens again this Saturday. Carson City’s rich and intriguing history is explored and theatrically re-lived with tours led by Madame Curry, a ghostly and witty community spirit based on the widow of Carson City’s founder, Abe Curry. Ghost Walks evening walking tours are a delightfully spooky and enjoyable way to experience Carson City’s Victorian era and diverse history. Hear about lingering spirits of the long ago centuries, haunted and paranormal stories and gossip from the past.

— This Saturday the Silver State Model T Ford Club will present “The Car That Changed the World” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. The Model T Ford was produced from 1909 to 1927 during which time over 15 million cars rolled off Ford's production lines. It is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile, which made car travel available to middle-class Americans. Go here for more information.
