Lyon County Commission votes 3-2 to rename justice complex after former President Trump
During the Thursday Lyon County Board of County Commissioners meeting, the Board voted 3-2 in favor of renaming the Lyon County Justice Complex in Yerington the “Donald J. Trump Justice Complex.”
Commissioner Robert Jacobson and Commissioner Wes Henderson voted against the item.
Jacobson stated that he was against the item because it was “partisan politics” and that he hopes the board can get back to do what they were appointed to, which is to manage county affairs.
Henderson stated that he is disappointed this agenda item came about prior to a discussion about creating a policy on how to name county facilities.
The agenda item was proposed by Commission Chair Vida Keller, who stated she would pay for the facility’s plaque through her own donations so that Lyon County tax payers would not have to foot the bill.
Commissioner Ken Gray, who had previously proposed renaming Old Dayton Valley Road “Pres. Trump Way,” stated that until the agenda came out he had no idea this would be on it, but that he was “pleasantly surprised,” and thanked his colleagues for the idea.
The majority of those who gave in-person or zoom-based public comment were against the naming.
Many of those who were against the proposal stated they were registered Republicans and Trump supporters, but that the name change would only cause further division within the community. Several others cited the fact that the name had nothing to do with Nevada, and it would be better to have all name changes revolve around either Nevada history or for Nevadans.
Those who were in favor of it stated that they supported the idea because they supported former president Trump.
