Increase in cannabis retail locations, curbside pick up on Carson City commission agenda
Discussions relating to the amount of retail cannabis locations in Carson City will be returning for a second time to the Planning Commission after the commission changed their previous recommendation at last month’s meeting.
During the June 29 meeting, the Planning Commission discussed recommending four total cannabis retail stores to the Board of Supervisors, instead of the previously discussed three. The board then voted to return the item to the next meeting so they could receive input from the community.
The meeting begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Community Center.
Carson City previously voted to cap the total number of cannabis dispensaries at two; however, under state law, four total would be allowed.
In Nevada, recreational cannabis was legalized in 2016, and dispensary allotments were based on population and were generally given to already established medical-marijuana dispensaries, such as Carson City's RISE and Sierra Well.
By state regulation, Carson City was allowed two medical dispensaries and up to four retail cannabis dispensaries, but Carson City soon enacted its own ordinance limiting the number to two total dispensaries.
Qualcan, LLC, the applicant for the item, asked to increase the total amount of cannabis stores in Carson City, as well as to authorize drive-through services.
However, the Planning Commission has made no changes to the draft regarding drive-throughs, which are expressly prohibited by Division 1.20.2(c), according to the agenda.
Approval of curbside pickup, which was first started in response to the pandemic, will be discussed as well, which many argue is imperative for disabled individuals who use cannabis medicinally.
Qualcan is also asking for a special use permit to construct a new cannabis location, if the increase in total locations are approved.
If approved by the commission, the item will go before the Board of Supervisors for final approval.
