Air quality degrades Monday morning as Oak Fire smoke pushes into western Nevada, Sierra
Widespread areas of smoke and haze from the Oak Fire in Mariposa County, Calif., has again settled Monday morning into western Nevada and Sierra. As of around 6:25 a.m. the Air Quality Index for Stateline at Lake Tahoe, Reno, Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville and Dayton areas is "unhealthy for sensitive groups," according to the latest airnow.gov reading.
Smoke lofted by the fire will continue to creep across the Sierra Front and into western Nevada this week, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Areas across the Lake Tahoe Basin, Carson Valley, and eastern Sierra may see periods of degraded air quality each night and morning with minor improvements by the afternoon.
How long will the smoke affect the region? That is dependent on the intensity and activity of the fire or any possible additional fires through the week, the weather service says.
The weather service advises people to take precautions to avoid outdoor activities in areas where there is degraded air quality.
