Carson City area weather: Gusty winds prompt Red Flag fire weather warning
Gusty winds and low humidity prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag warning from noon to 10 p.m. Monday for Carson City and surrounding counties.
The Red Flag Warning is for the following areas: Northern Sierra Front including Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Southern Washoe, Northern Washoe, Western Lyon counties, West Humboldt Basin in Pershing County and Eastern Lassen County in California.
NWS forecasters say winds will be out of the southwest 15-25 mph with gusts 30-40 mph. Ridgelines could see gusts of 40-50 mph. Humidity is expected at a minimum of between 5 to 12 percent.
The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The National Weather Service advises people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires and, to follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.gov/reno for
