Lightning sparks wildfire southeast of Gardnerville
Fire crews from around the region responded to lightning sparked fires early Monday morning to the south, north and east of Carson City. Thunderstorms are expected through Tuesday possibly into Wednesday for northeastern California and western Nevada.
To the east, a Carson City Fire Department crew responded to Highway 50 in the Mound House area for a report of two trees putting out smoke at around 7:05 a.m. likely due to a lightning strike.
Elsewhere there's a 300 to 500 acre wildfire that was likely sparked by lightning early Monday morning southeast of Gardnerville, according to the East Fork Fire Protection District. Captain Terry Taylor told KRNV News 4 the fire ignited in the area of Preachers Mine in Buffalo Canyon after lightning hit the area around 3:30 a.m. on Monday, July 24.
The Bureau of Land Management and the Division of Forestry are providing mutual aid to the East Fork Fire Protection District with both aircraft and hand crews. No structures are immediately threatened and no injuries have been reported, Taylor told News 4.
Crews also responded to a tree fire at around 4:50 a.m. on Leviathan Mine Road.
To the north of Carson City, crews firefighters were called just after 2 a.m. to investigate smoke in the 4600 block Eastlake Boulevard on the south side of the McClellan Peak area.
