UNR Extension hosts Storey County STEM Day Camp in Virginia City in August
VIRGINIA CITY — The saying “STEM is more than engineering and math, it is art, technology and discovery” is very relevant to the Storey County Summer STEM Day Camp being hosted by University of Nevada Extension, mornings on August 3-6 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 Noon in Virginia City’s Piper’s Opera House.
The Virginia City based camp offers an exclusive opportunity for tweens between the ages of 9 through 12 to explore rocketry, robotics, electricity, chemistry, and space exploration. Campers will experience hands-on instruction, games and fun with 4-H STEM coordinator, Jim Barcellos. A celebration showcasing STEM projects made during the camp contributed by each camper will be the culminating activity for the four-morning camp being held on Friday morning, August 6.
The camp would not be possible without support and/or funding provided by Storey County, Google, Bayer, Toyota, US Airforce, USDA and University of Nevada, Reno. The project is a joint venture sponsored by the Storey County Cooperative Extension office as a youth outreach project that fulfills the University of Nevada, Reno’s land grant mission.
While there is no cost for participation in the camp, registration forms must be completed before or on the first day of the program by a legal guardian or parent submitted at the Extension office located at 2621 Northgate Lane in Carson City, Nevada or scanned and sent to barcellosj@unr.edu. The forms can be emailed to families who call Jim Barcellos at the Carson City Extension office at 775-887-2252. information.
