Smoke and haze around Carson City, Lake Tahoe from California fire
A large fire in Mariposa County, Calif. is sending smoke and haze Tuesday into Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton, Silver Springs and the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the National Weather Service.
The Detwiler Fire has burned more than 19,000 acres as of Tuesday afternoon, is five percent contained and threatens 300 homes along Highway 49 north of the town of Mariposa.
Winds from the south are sending smoke from the fire along the Sierra, over Lake Tahoe and into Carson City and Reno areas, according to a National Weather Service forecaster in the Reno office. The forecaster said Tuesday's smoke from the Long Valley Fire burning near Pyramid Lake is moving northeast, away from Carson City, Lake Tahoe and Reno.
A Red Flag Warning remains in effect Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m. for much of western Nevada including Carson City. Winds today will be from the southwest to west 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph with 6 to 12 percent humidity.
The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fires to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first
responders can contain them. Existing fires will possibly break containment lines as spotting and the rate of fire spread increases, according to the weather service.
The weather service advises people to avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires and to follow local fire restrictions.
