Waterspout spotted Wednesday night over Lake Tahoe
A rare waterspout occurred on Lake Tahoe Wednesday night shortly after 9 pm. Usually, waterspouts are caused by differential heating currents with small scale rotation super-imposed aloft.
This event, however, appears to have had a little more rotation involved and a little less differential heating considering the time it occurred, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Eyewitnesses saw the waterspout form near the mouth of Emerald Bay and move towards Tahoe Keys very quickly. Fortunately, there were no reports of this moving onshore.
Meanwhile, low pressure moving over the region thursday will keep temperatures about 10-12 degrees below average. Expect widespread rain showers with isolated thunderstorms. Strong thunderstorms will remain possible today but should be less widespread. With saturated soils and more rain, flash flooding will remain possible, but should also be less widespread than the last few days, according to the weather service.
Storms that do develop today will be slow moving. This means that brief moderate to heavy rain is possible. While the risk of flooding is far less today than previous days, it's not out of the question for brief locally heavy rain to produce minor flooding in areas that have received significant amounts of rain in the past few days.
The most likely areas for flooding today would be low lying and poor drainage areas along with locations near steep terrain and burn scars from wildfires that received rain during the past few days.
