Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs and Shriner's hospital each given large donations from estate of Northern Nevada woman
The generosity of one Northern Nevada resident will be providing for many young people and their activities for years to come. The Estate of Esther Schwarzer gave the Nevada Area Council of Boy Scouts of America a check for nearly $121,000 to use for programs benefiting Scouting. Receiving identical checks were the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
Cole Smith, owner/broker of Sierra Nevada Realty Group in Minden, was guardian of the late Mrs. Schwarzer. She asked Smith to not only help organize her life after the passing of her husband, Henry, she also asked him to be her guardian as she had no relatives. She passed away at age 94.
“I got to know them pretty well,” Smith said. “When her husband passed away, she had nobody, no children, no relatives and she had some real estate and she called. I helped her out and she asked me to be her guardian. I said I’d be happy to do that. We became very fast friends.”
“When I helped her put her trust together,” he continued, “she mentioned the Boy Scouts, the Boys and Girls Club and Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. She never had children, but in giving back, she is being a part of children.”
Smith chuckled and said Mrs. Schwarzer was a character. Born in Switzerland, the Schwarzers traveled extensively, lived in Paraguay and then Los Angeles. They both were pilots and “they would come here and land in Minden. They would see the mountains that reminded them of Switzerland.”
Facilitating the donations was Cassandra Jones of the Heritage Law Group in Minden. This gift will benefit Scouts from Eastern California to Eastern Nevada and south to Bridgeport, Calif., including scouts in the Carson City, Carson Valley, Reno areas and statewide.
In the second of two submitted photos, Boy Scouts of America officers Paul Penttila, left, and Jeff Whitaker accept a check from Cole Smith and Cassandra Jones. Penttila is Scout Executive/CEO and Whitaker is Council President. Smith is owner/broker of Sierra Nevada Realty Group and Jones is an attorney of Heritage Law Group.
