Carson City area weather: Chance of thunderstorms Wednesday prompt Red Flag warning
With clear skies on tap for Carson City and western Nevada Tuesday evening, forecasters have turned their attention to Wednesday and an upper level disturbance that could produce isolated thunderstorms in the region, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag fire weather warning for much of the area.
The Red Flag Warning has been issued for western Nevada and the eastern Sierra from 1 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday morning due to this thunderstorm potential. Thunderstorms that do form will move quickly, resulting in an increased threat for lightning strikes with limited rainfall and wind gusts up to 50 mph, according to the weather service.
The Red Flag Warning states thunderstorms may produce minimal rainfall and abundant lightning with strong, erratic outflow winds from the southwest to southeast up to 60 mph.
This lightning can create new fire starts and may combine with strong outflow winds to cause a fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. Check livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
Meanwhile temperatures around Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas for Tuesday, Independence Day through Thursday will be in the lower 90s for daytime highs, reaching the mid 90s Friday and upper 90s on Saturday.
