(UPDATE 6:22) Motor home fire halts traffic at Carson City freeway
An motor home fire has shut down the Carson City bypass and the Highway 50 east entrance to the freeway this evening. According to witnesses on the scene and police scanner traffic, the motor home, parked on the freeway between Fairview and 5th Street near the bridge, went up in flames at around 5:33 this afternoon. It was extinguished at around 5:50 p.m.
Carson City firefighters responding said the motor home was completely engulfed in flames with the major concern at the time of the call being the propane tanks on the vehicle, according to police scanner traffic. The Nevada Highway Patrol responded with units to help block traffic onto the freeway. All passengers escaped unhurt, according to firefighters on the scene.
As of 6:20, traffic continues to be backed up in both directions on the freeway and at Highway 50 East in the north and southbound entrance lanes to the bypass. Officers are now waiting for the motor home, described as an older model, possibly a Winnebago, to be loaded on a truck and hauled away. Once that is done traffic should be released in both directions, according to police scanner traffic.
