Six Mile Canyon Road reopens following Sunday's 12 acre brush fire
The Six Mile Canyon Fire in Storey County that started Sunday evening was 100 percent contained as of 11 p.m. Sunday night and the road is now open, officials said.
Crews remained on scene throughout the night continuing to mop-up the edges of the fire. On Monday, those crews remain on scene and will concentrate on establishing a line around the entire perimeter of the fire and extinguish all interior areas of smoke, according to Storey County officials.
The cause is under investigation. The fire burned 11.8 acres mostly on private lands. Six Mile Canyon Road is open. Motorists using the road are urged to drive with caution and reduce speeds in the fire area.
Central Lyon County Fire Protection District sent Battalion 30, Brush 35, Brush 37, Tender 38 and Tender 39 to help Storey County suppress the 6 Mile Canyon Fire. Upon first unit arrival the fire was already at 2-3 acres with a rapid rate of spread. BLM and NDF also assisted in suppression efforts and the fire was held at 12 acres.
Firefighting agencies would like to remind everyone that conditions are very dry and that the smallest spark can ignite a fire.
