Carson City area weather: Heat advisory continues Sunday, some cooling relief by midweek
High temperatures hovering around 100 degrees has prompted the National Weather Service to extend a heat advisory for the Greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County areas until 8 p.m. Sunday night.
Temperatures anywhere between 95 to 101 degrees are expected during the afternoon hours. See the advisory here. The weather service advises that the combined heat and mild overnight lows will yield heat impacts to sensitive populations, those exposed to the afternoon sun for long periods of time, and to those who do not have adequate home cooling.
People should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 911.
Meanwhile, breezy winds are expected the first half of this coming week, with temperatures cooling to near normal by midweek. Another heatwave with chances for thunderstorms is possible going into next weekend. Go here for the National Weather Service area forecast discussion.
