Lyon County Sheriff: 28 arrested following cock-fighting bust in Silver Springs, nearly 100 roosters euthanized
On June 3, 2023, at approximately 1241 hours, Lyon County Animal Services (LCAS) received an anonymous complaint in reference suspicious activity occurring at a residence on 10th Street, in Silver Springs, Nevada. The Lyon County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) was requested to assist.
Upon their arrival, a Lyon County deputy encountered a large gathering of people in and around an "Open-air" barn. They witnessed hand-to-hand wagering, and subjects holding roosters.
As a result of the ensuing investigation 59 deceased roosters were discovered in and around a garbage can located outside a makeshift "Fighting" ring, which was constructed of hay bales. All of the deceased roosters had injuries that were consistent with those sustained from bird-fighting.
Per Nevada Revised Statute 574.080, LCAS and LCSO seized 96 live chickens, as well as evidentiary items indicating this was an organized "Bird-fighting" event.
Of the 96 birds seized, two (2) were severely injured and later died of injuries consistent with bird-fighting. Three (3) of the seized birds were hens and re-homed.
On June 6, 2023 the Nevada Department of Agriculture assisted in euthanizing the remaining 91 fighting roosters.
As a result of this investigation charges have been filed against 28 individuals through the Lyon County District Attorney's Office. The charges filed are felony violations of NRS 574.060 and NRS 574.070.
