Annual Father’s Day Powwow at Stewart Indian School returns this weekend
The annual Father’s Day Powwow is back this weekend at the Stewart Indian School Museum and Cultural Center in Carson City beginning Friday, June 16 through Sunday June 18.
For those who have not attended before, the Father’s Day Powwow is a tradition that began over 20 years ago, which includes a weekend of dance competitions, songs, traditional arts and crafts vendors, and of course — Indian tacos and fry bread.
Grand entry times are Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at noon and 6:30 p.m., and Sunday at noon.
The dancing competitions are the center of the weekend, which brings together both national and regional dancers to compete in several categories from the youngest tribe members through to elder competitions.
Stewart School Alumni are invited to a special barbecue dinner Saturday at 4 p.m. within the Nevada Indian Commission Building on the campus of the Stewart School.
The museum and gift shop will be open all weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Museum attendees will find the exhibit Dancing for the Earth, Dancing for the People: Powwow Regalia and Art of the Great Basin, brought together by Fallon Paiute/Modoc curator Melissa Melero-Moose. The exhibit will close July 1, so be sure to visit soon!
