Single lane closures Saturday in Dayton to install U.S. 50 pedestrian safety improvements
CARSON CITY — Lane reductions will take place on U.S. 50 in Dayton Saturday, June 15 as the Nevada Department of Transportation installs pedestrian safety improvements.
U.S. 50 at East Pike Street in Dayton will be reduced to a single lane in each direction from 6 a.m.-5 p.m. June 15 for roadway resurfacing. Additionally, overnight lane closures will also take place on U.S. 50 at East Pike Street in Dayton and Silver State Street in Carson City between 7 p.m.-6 a.m. June 24 through June 26. The work is part of the following pedestrian safety enhancements:
— Electronic flashing pedestrian crossing beacons, known as rapid rectangular flashing beacons, will be installed, allowing pedestrians to activate the signs to help stop traffic as they cross the street.
— Sidewalks will be improved for safer and easier pedestrian travel.
— Overhead street lighting will be installed in certain pedestrian crossing areas for enhanced visibility.
Daytime shoulder and periodic overnight single lane closures will continue over the coming weeks for completion of the project.
The improvements by contractor Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc. will help enhance safety for pedestrians traveling across the highway between residences and businesses and restaurants, as well as for the as many as 30,000 drivers traveling the highway daily.
Similar pedestrian safety improvements are also being installed on other areas of Carson City and Gardnerville. The improvements are part of the approximately $10 million in state highway funds NDOT dedicates to pedestrian safety improvements every year. Additionally, NDOT dedicates approximately $21 million annually in federal highway safety funds to roadway safety projects and programs.
