Carson City man arrested for prohibited ownership of a smartphone after calling in welfare check on incapacitated man
A 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested for suspicion of felony violation of probation after being caught with a smart phone, which he was barred from having as terms of his probation, after calling deputies on report of an unconscious individual.
According to the arrest report, Alexander Roman Merchant was arrested in the area of N. Carson St. Friday evening after he called deputies to ask for a welfare check on a 56-year-old man who was in and out of consciousness at his home.
Merchant was not home at the time of the call, and was en route from a restaurant. Dispatch advised Merchant was on probation and was not allowed to have an electronic device with internet capability.
Deputies made contact with Merchant in a parking lot and asked if he had a cellphone on him, to which Merchant said he did. He stated it had no cellular service but it did have wifi access. Parole and probation stated they wanted him taken into custody for probation violation.
He was booked without incident.

— A 37-year-old Soda Springs, Calif. man was arrested in the area of S. Curry St. for DUI first offense Thursday afternoon.
According to the arrest report, deputies responded to the area in reference to an intoxicated driver. The reporting party stated they had been watching a movie and had seen a man, later identified as the 37-year-old suspect, drinking inside the theater. Once the movie ended, the reporting party stated they saw the suspect and a friend walk out of the parking lot and get into a vehicle. The vehicle pulled out from the parking spot but then came to a stop.
When deputies arrived, they found the vehicle still pulled out of the parking spot, blocking half of the roadway. The man had red, watery eyes, slurred speech, and there was a strong odor of alcohol emanating from his person, according to the arrest report.
The man refused a preliminary breath test but failed many of the field sobriety test indicators.
The man was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence, and a warrant was granted to take his blood whilst at the jail.
Bail: $1,137
— A 40-year-old Carson City woman was arrested on a contempt of court warrant and a probation violation warrant.
Bail: $3,000 cash only.
