Weekend events around Carson City area include Carson Valley Days, live theater at BAC, Library Learning Challenge, Nevada Outdoor Experience among others

A plethora of activities fill the Carson City area this weekend as June proceeds and warmer weather persists.

— Carson Valley Days celebrates 111 years beginning today, June 10 down in Gardnerville and Minden. The 76th annual parade will proceed on Saturday, June 12. Read the story here for more details.

— Nevada State Parks is hosting ‘Discover Nevada State Parks’ statewide this Saturday, June 12. Park visitors will receive free day-use admission and free fishing (no license required) at all of Nevada’s State Parks. Go to the story here for more information.

— Wild Horse Productions, the Brewery Arts Center and Youth Theatre Carson City will present their “Songs for a New World” event on Friday and Saturday, June 11 and 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center outdoor stage.

— Presented by the Nevada Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the Nevada Outdoor Experience will be held at the Capitol City Gun Club on Saturday, June 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This FREE event aims to inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and is family-friendly.

— The Carson City Library will kick off its annual all-ages Summer Learning Challenge this Saturday, June 12, with a nature and animal-themed registration drop-in event in the library's outdoor garden area.

What is the summer learning challenge? It is a summer-long event featuring workshops, presentations and activities. The challenge includes age-appropriate assignments for participants as well as raffle prizes for those who complete the challenge.

The kickoff event is Saturday, June 12, 10 a.m. to noon at the Library Garden, Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop Street. For more information, go to the story here.

— The 2nd annual Prison Hill OHV area cleanup will be held on Saturday, June 12 at 9 a.m., hosted by Off Road Essentials. Participants are encouraged to bring gloves and are invited to stay for lunch and a fun run afterwards. More information on the Facebook event page here.

— The Nevada State Museum is hosting Family Fun Saturday: Nevada P.S. I Love You on June 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the upstairs auditorium. Participants can decorate a postcard for the Nevada Humanities Nevada, P. S. I Love You Postcard Project.

— Carson City's Capital City C.I.R.C.L.E.S. Initiative is hosting a virtual move-a-thon as a fundraiser. The Capital City C.I.R.C.L.E.S. Move-a-Thon will be taking place virtually, everywhere, wherever participants like! It will be happening Saturday, June 12, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

This virtual Move-a-Thon asks folks anywhere to, “move to end poverty.” Participants can register and buy their tickets here ($20 for adults, $15 for kids under 13): and encourages them to take a video of how they get moving that day.

And, for anyone interested in winning a weekend getaway at a Graeeagle Cabin in Portola, there are $50 raffle tickets for that. Winners will be announced on the 12.

All the proceeds will go to Capital City C.I.R.C.L.E.S. initiative, which is a cooperative community effort to elevate people out of poverty by intentionally creating relationships across class lines, and empowering people in poverty to chart their own course toward self-sufficiency, which will undoubtedly be crucial as Northern Nevadans emerge from this pandemic.

— This Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 3 p.m. join the Carson City Park Rangers for a course aimed at the beginner and novice level hikers who are looking to learn new tips and skills!

They'll guide you up Prison Hill from Clearview Drive, covering topics such as trail etiquette, hiker safety, Leave No Trace principles, trail types, and much more! Upon completion of this course, you will be an official Carson City Hiker with the Hiking License to prove it.

The hike is considered "More Difficult" under the IMBA Trail Rating system. Expect moderate terrain, sandy sections, and rocky obstacles along a two-three mile loop. Register online here.

— The Trash Mob is a fast-paced litter clean up event that takes place once a month in a park or open space area in Carson City. We get together on a Saturday for a focused hour of picking up garbage — a satisfying way to start the weekend. We'll be meeting Saturday, June 12 at Carson River Park (on Sierra Vista Lane, just across the river from the main parking area) and will work 8am to 9am. Bring closed toe shoes, gloves, and work pants, and be prepared to sign a waiver.

— June events launch the 2021 Summer Festival at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. On Sunday, June 13, at 10:00 am, author and entertainer CW Bayer will give a presentation on his book, Strychnine Banjo, written about Jake Wallace, Charley Rhoades and "The Days of '49.”

It is the long-lost story of one of the most important mining songs written in the far West during the 19th century, "The Days of '49'". Composed as a parody for a burlesque in Virginia City, Nevada, during 1868 by banjoist Charley Rhoades, "The Days of '49" became the anthem of the pioneers, the 49ers, as they aged.
